I believe that we are born, intrinsically Whole and our human birthright and potential is to experience a state of spaciousness, equanimity and joy. This is an inner state in which our awareness expands to experience a sense of interconnection with all living systems and peacefulness and acceptance with ourselves. This awareness may arise spontaneously, or may be stimulated by any number of external circumstances. These experiences emerge irrespective of any particular spiritual belief system, national or ethnic origin, age, gender, education, or social standing. . These states have been described as mystical experiences, unity consciousness or peak experiences.
Transpersonal Psychotherapy is a psychology of health, supporting human potential and innate Wholeness. Its focus is wellness rather than pathology. It seeks the balanced development of the intellectual emotional, spiritual, physical, social and creative aspects of human life. Some refer to this integrative view as Mind-Body-Spirit Wellness and the healing of these life aspects creates the foundation upon which we build a meaningful life. This orientation is strength based without denying the obstacles that may hinder full human expression. It is also sometimes called Spiritual Psychology, for it recognizes that humanity has not only drives directed toward individual survival, but also toward cooperation and connection; and that intrinsic in our human nature is a calling toward an experience of Awareness that is more Expansive and all embracing than our personal self.
Transpersonal Psychology is developmental in perspective acknowledging that life circumstances, choices and aptitudes have led us to where we currently stand in relation to those issues we wish to change. When we view life as “journey” we recognize there are always opportunities to create new life paths no matter what has come before.
Transpersonal Psychotherapies incorporate a wealth of modalities to help move the individual into increased awareness with self, positive relationship with others, and gain skills to manage as well as change unhelpful thinking or behavioral patterns. Ultimately our work is to encourage and foster positive, creative action in the personal and greater world.
